Luis “Chispas” Guerrero: Metal to the Pedal

Centro Cultural Aztlan presents: Luis “Chispas” Guerrero: Metal to the Pedal

Opening Reception: Friday, June 2, 2023, 6-9PM Performance by Armando and Juan Tejeda

Centro Cultural Aztlan is delighted to present Luis “Chispas” Guerrero, a well-known San Antonio artist who has taken the rich legends and icons of the Mexican American community and forged them into a unique high-volume body of work. Known as Luis “Chispas” because of his welding knowledge and work, he recently switched to a new medium, and we will be presenting his new paintings for the first time, along with some of his playful metal sculptures.  His subject matter ranges from Robots and Alien (Galaxy) Passports, to paintings of classic vintage pedal cars. Guerrero has exhibited widely throughout San Antonio and South Texas. In recent years, his work has become highly collectible as he was commission by the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) to erect a large-scale sculpture on the campus ground. Guerrero’s work was also purchased for the permanent collection at Arizona State University by the Hispanic Research Center. He will be featured in the 3rd edition of the Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Art (published by Bilingual Press). Artist Statement: “My Art is about having a passion and mixing a certain creativity into it – transforming an idea into a Masterpiece. The pedal cars are memories of my childhood.  We played with a used one that had broken pedals. We formed wonderful memories pushing one another up and down the street.” Join us for the opening reception on Friday, June 2, 2023, from 6-9PM in the Galeria Expresion at 1800 Fredericksburg Road #103. Music performance by Armando and Juan Tejeda. The exhibit is free and open to the public and will be on view through June 29th, 2023. Monday-Thursday, 10:00am-4:00pm, except for Holidays.

Joe Lopez- Momentos en Tiempo/Moments in Time

Centro Cultural Aztlan is delighted to present Joe Lopez with a new exhibition titled Momentos en Tiempo/Moments in Time. This will be Joe Lopez first exhibit in over three years. Now, after three and a half years his art will be featured in a solo exhibition at Centro Cultural Aztlan. Paintings for the exhibit capture the everyday lived experiences, identities, relationships, spiritual life and hard work of people whose lives are not often in mainstream cultural representation. Lopez was born in 1945 in San Antonio, Texas and grew up in a small neighborhood known as “El Barrio Escondido” on the Northside of town. “Although we were looked down on, we were extremely proud of who we were ...Mexicanos Americanos/Chicanos, I hope to bring joy and pride to all those who attend. I hope they can see their experiences reflected in my paintings.”says Lopez. Of Lopez ‘s art, Malena Gonzalez-Cid simply says “ Joe Lopez’s art honors the common man.” Momentos en Tiempo/Moments in Time will open on Thursday, April 6, 2023 from 6-9PM in the Galeria Expresion at 1800 Fredericksburg Road #103. Las Mujeres Regionales by Frank W. Harris III

Centro Cultural Aztlan begins its Fall Arts Festivities with a solo exhibition of Las Mujeres Regionales, a series of new works by local artist Frank W. Harris, III. The exhibit opens on Friday, September 16, 2022 from 6 to 9 pm in the Galeria Expresion located at 1800 Fredericksburg Road in the Deco Building and will be on display through October 20, 2022. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
Opening Reception:Friday, September 16, 2022. Exhibit will be on display until October 20, 2022. Gallery hours: Mon-Thursday 10AM-4PM
Frank W. Harris, III is a native San Antonian and a graduate of Jefferson High School. He attended the Art Institute of San Miguel de Allende Guanajuato and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity University in 1983. Frank’s work reveals a deep emotional influence by his maternal grandmother Doña Petra Ortega’s collection of Mexican calendar art. His fascination with Mexican folk art and textiles would become the subject matter of his paintings. Frank began his own collection of Mexican regional attire from every Region and State that make up the country of Mexico. The exhibition entitled Las Mujeres Regionales is the result of his deep love of Mexican culture and decades of constant creative effort. We thought this would be a great exhibit to celebrate Las Fiestas Patrias and Hispanic Heritage Month.
