Centro Cultural Aztlan is delighted to present Joe Lopez with a new exhibition titled Momentos en Tiempo/Moments in Time. This will be Joe Lopez first exhibit in over three years. Lopez was to have an opening at Freight Gallery (the original Gallista building) when Covid hit the scene and the exhibit was unfortunately cancelled. Now, after three and a half years his art will be featured in a solo exhibition at Centro Cultural Aztlan. Paintings for the exhibit capture the everyday lived experiences, identities, relationships, spiritual life and hard work of people whose lives are not often in mainstream
cultural representation. Lopez was born in 1945 in San Antonio, Texas and grew up in a small neighborhood known as “El Barrio Escondido” on the Northside of town. “Although we were looked down on, we were extremely proud of who we were ...Mexicanos Americanos/Chicanos, I hope to bring joy and pride to all those who attend. I hope they can see their experiences reflected in my paintings.”says Lopez. Of Lopez ‘s art, Malena Gonzalez-Cid simply says “ Joe Lopez’s art honors the common man.”
Momentos en Tiempo/Moments in Time will open on Thursday, April 6, 2023 from 6-9PM in the Galeria Expresion at 1800 Fredericksburg Road #103. Music performance by Manolo “Mano” Martinez.

The Vuelo de Mariposas Spring Market gives our local artists an affordable venue in which to sell their works of art and provides visitors the opportunity to meet and greet the artists and artisans. Presenting their “spring line”, artists and artisans are sure to bring the newest trends and colors of the season. This year’s exhibition focuses on social issues facing women, including reproductive justice, working conditions, access, identity, and other relevant issues of today. We selected artwork that addresses women’s experiences, struggles, roles, and contributions as creators, supporters, change-makers, nurturers, and more. Artists are encouraged to express their unique perspectives on diverse social issues. The Lead Artist for this exhibition is Sarah Shore. Participating Artists include: Lead Artist: Sarah Shore. Centro Cultural Aztlan is pleased to present the 46th annual Segundo de Febrero exhibition titled Segundo de Febrero: Chicana/Chicano Reunion. This exhibit will honor the 175th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the U.S.-Mexican War, redistributing the border, and creating a new bicultural population. In this exhibition, an exceptional group of celebrated artists will explore the impact of broken treaties, new borders, and their effects on Latino, Chicano, and indigenous history and culture.
Join us at the opening reception on Thursday, February 2nd, 2023 from 6:00-9:00pm for light refreshments, music and poetry by The Jazz Poets of San Antonio featuring Los Chromies.

Centro Cultural Aztlan is honored to present the 27th Annual Celebración a la Virgen de Guadalupe Exhibit.
Visitors will explore the significance of the Latin-American cultural icon, La Virgen de Guadalupe, featuring original works of art in acrylic, oil, watercolor, mixed media, sculpture, and more. This exhibition is the oldest and most revered visual arts program featuring La Virgen de Guadalupe as the main theme.

Centro Cultural Aztlan begins its Fall Arts Festivities with a solo exhibition of Las Mujeres Regionales, a series of new works by local artist Frank W. Harris, III. The exhibit opens on Friday, September 16, 2022 from 6 to 9 pm in the Galeria Expresion located at 1800 Fredericksburg Road in the Deco Building and will be on display through October 20, 2022. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Frank W. Harris, III is a native San Antonian and a graduate of Jefferson High School. He attended the Art Institute of San Miguel de Allende Guanajuato and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity University in 1983. Frank’s work reveals a deep emotional influence by his maternal grandmother Doña Petra Ortega’s collection of Mexican calendar art. His fascination with Mexican folk art and textiles would become the subject matter of his paintings. Frank began his own collection of Mexican regional attire from every Region and State that make up the country of Mexico. The exhibition entitled Las Mujeres Regionales is the result of his deep love of Mexican culture and decades of constant creative effort. We thought this would be a great exhibit to celebrate Las Fiestas Patrias and Hispanic Heritage Month.
Centro Cultural Aztlan will present El Gran Dia de Los Artistas to celebrate our 45th Anniversary on Saturday, July 23, 2022, from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Centro Cultural Aztlan was incorporated in June of 1977, and we are inviting you to help us mark this significant milestone by celebrating with us over four decades of presenting valuable arts programs to the San Antonio community. El Gran Dia de Los Artistas is a free community event and promises to be an explosion of creativity in the Deco District showcasing live music, poetry, theatre, dance, art demonstrations, and live painting.

Centro Cultural Aztlan is honored to present Xavier Garza's latest exhibition: The Return of Quetzalcoatl: Heroes, Villains and Space Monsters.
Legendary characters like La Llorona, los Duendes and Las Lechuzas return to do battle with ancient deities like Quetzalcoatl. But there is a twist to their return as they are all reinterpreted as visual depictions of modern day lucha libre heroes, villains and monsters. The images pay homage to the golden age of lucha libre films where masked heroes did battle against vampires, zombies, space aliens and other monstrosities.
Opening Reception: Friday, July 15, 2022. Exhibit will be on display until August 18, 2022.

His latest book is titled La Llorona Can’t Scare Me. He has been honored with the Pure Belpre Honor and his books are on several reading lists including Tejas Star and Texas Institute of Letters. His art work has been featured in such books are Chicano Art for the Millenium and Contemporary Chicana/o Art: Artists, Works, Culture and Education.
