Centro Cultural Aztlan is pleased to present Newspaper Boys: Ayer y Hoy en San Anto
Centro Cultural Aztlan presents Newspaper Boys: Ayer y Hoy en San Anto on Friday, August 9, 2024 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. This is a two-man exhibit featuring new works by visual artists Oscar A. Galván Jr. and Martin Emmanuel Rangel.
In this exhibit, life-long visual artists Oscar A. Galván Jr. and Martin Emmanuel Rangel work together to give new life to the old practice of spreading the news. The exhibit pays homage to the artists’ ancestors and nostalgically explores the aesthetics of past eras. The artists depict newspaper delivery boys across generations and time periods, blending past and present to share a unique perspective of the evolution of the time-honored tradition of delivering the news.
Both artists were born and raised in San Antonio and, through this exhibit, they evoke memories of San Antonio landmarks in the Westside and Downtown, like Joske’s and Galván Pharmacy. The artists draw on emotions by superimposing newspaper boys of the past onto present-day settings of San Antonio’s city center, historic places, and various long-standing neighborhoods. They use color and contrast to juxtapose the aesthetics and style of the past with today’s culture and environment. They artfully reflect the evolution over time of the way that our news is distributed.
Galvan’s own father, Oscar A. Galván Sr., helped contribute to his family’s livelihood by working hard as a paperboy during the Great Depression. This exhibit honors those who may have started out delivering newspapers and have gone on to become leaders and make significant contributions in their community.
Join us for the exhibit’s opening reception from 6:00pm to 9:00pm on August 9th at Centro Cultural Aztlan. The exhibition is free and open to the public and will be on view through Thursday, October 17, 2024 Monday-Thursday, 10:00am-4:00pm.

Project:MASA’s mission is to establish an awareness of outer space as an integral part of the Chicana/o modern mythos, reality and iconography. Rasquachismo and Latinxfuturism energize this exhibition, inviting us to collectively imagine and enact alternative horizons of possibility in which we all thrive juntos. Each year in June, the Summer Solstice marks the Northern Hemisphere’s longest day and shortest night of the year – Midsummer. The Mayans oriented their sacred sites, like Chichén Itzá, with the cycles of the Sun. Indigenous peoples synchronize their agricultural and ceremonial calendars with these solar cycles. Human beings need to return to these cycles to recuperate harmony and balance with Life. The English word “solstice” comes from the Latin word solstitium, meaning “sun standing still,” since at the solstice the sun appears to stand still in its path across the horizon. This mid-point in the sun’s annual movement symbolizes transformation and renewal, or death and rebirth. Artwork in this exhibit is inspired by these themes.

Centro Cultural Aztlanis pleased to present the 15th annual Mujeres de Aztlan exhibition, titled Mujeres de Aztlan: Persistent and Resilient.
Through this annual exhibition, Centro Cultural Aztlan aims to raise the visibility of women artists working to develop their careers and expand their artistic expressions.
This year’s exhibition focuses on the resilience and persistence of women. These qualities, which seem to be innate to women, are used by women across the globe to address and change the range of gender specific obstacles we face. Resilience makes us stronger as life changes. We develop discernment through experience, mistakes, and hard knocks. We become fearless and adapt to continual change. Women have the persistence to make societal changes such as gaining the right to vote, gaining recognition of female artists, and equal pay for some female athletes. Artists are encouraged to express their unique perspective on these qualities of women. The lead artist for this exhibition is Kathleen Baker Pittman.
Join us at the opening reception on Friday, March 8, 2024 from 6:00-9:00pm for light refreshments and live music by Ariel Corinne.
The exhibit is free and open to the public and will be on view through Thursday, March 28, 2024 Monday-Thursday, 10:00am-4:00pm, except during holidays.
