Jorge Sandoval – Fotos y Recuerdos (2000-2023)

Centro Cultural Aztlan is delighted to present Jorge Sandoval – Fotos y Recuerdos. This exhibition is a culmination of the past twenty-four years documenting the world around him. Jorge Sandoval is a San Antonio local photographer, filmmaker, producer, and writer and has been dedicating himself to preserving and promoting Chicano Art for over 45 years. His photographs focus on cultural events and the spaces and lives of people in Mexico and San Antonio; but has traveled to many places around the world looking and capturing the images describing the most vulnerable and history defining moments in time. This exhibit is part of the annual FOTOSEPTIEMBRE Photography Festival.
Fotos y Recuerdos will open on Friday, September 8, 2023 from 6-9PM in the Galeria Expresion at Centro Cultural Aztlan, 1800 Fredericksburg Road #103. Music performance by Juan & Armando Tejeda.
The exhibit is free and open to the public and will be on view through October 18th, 2023. Monday-Thursday, 10:00am-4:00pm, except for Holidays. Centro Cultural Aztlan is delighted to present Luis “Chispas” Guerrero, a well-known San Antonio artist who has taken the rich legends and icons of the Mexican American community and forged them into a unique high-volume body of work. Known as Luis “Chispas” because of his welding knowledge and work, he recently switched to a new medium, and we will be presenting his new paintings for the first time, along with some of his playful metal sculptures.  His subject matter ranges from Robots and Alien (Galaxy) Passports, to paintings of classic vintage pedal cars. Guerrero has exhibited widely throughout San Antonio and South Texas. In recent years, his work has become highly collectible as he was commission by the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) to erect a large-scale sculpture on the campus ground. Guerrero’s work was also purchased for the permanent collection at Arizona State University by the Hispanic Research Center. He will be featured in the 3rd edition of the Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Art (published by Bilingual Press). Artist Statement: “My Art is about having a passion and mixing a certain creativity into it – transforming an idea into a Masterpiece. The pedal cars are memories of my childhood.  We played with a used one that had broken pedals. We formed wonderful memories pushing one another up and down the street.” Join us for the opening reception on Friday, June 2, 2023, from 6-9PM in the Galeria Expresion at 1800 Fredericksburg Road #103. The 14th Annual Mole Festival promises to be an exciting gastro-cultura culinary experience sure to satisfy the community with good food, drinks, cultura, y música while supporting Centro Cultural Aztlan’s commitment to preserving and promoting Chicano/a, Latino/a, and indigenous arts and culture, and through our commitment to diversity, education, and promotion of local artists. Get your taste buds ready for one of the most deliciously unique fundraising events in San Antonio. Decadent Mole dishes will be prepared and generously donated by local restaurants, local chefs, and community cooks for your taste buds to enjoy. Refreshing beverages will be provided along with specialty drinks crafted by Tito’s Handmade Vodka. After tasting over 20 of the best Moles in San Antonio, guests and invited judges will vote for their favorite Mole. He holds a BA in Art from A&I University, and has a master’s in Fine Arts from Texas A&M Kingsville. Don studied ballet folklórico at Bellas Artes in Mexico City, where he was certified as a Maestro. He is a former dancer with the Royal Ballet Company in Canada, and spent time on Broadway in New York City with Ballet Folklórico de México. Don later became an art and dance teacher for youth grades K-12 in schools and private studios. In 1998, Don helped start the Ballet Folklórico program at the Edgewood ISD Fine Arts Academy, where he was devoted to his students for nearly 20 years. Now retired, he focuses his artwork on the rich cultura here in San Antonio and South Texas. Don continues to create art through installations, costume design, and set design.
